SHEET METAL MECHANIC
Reports to: CHC Job Foreman

1.  Summary of Duties

A Sheet Metal Mechanic reports to the CHC Job Foreman or in some cases the CHC Job Superintendent and is responsible for performing a range of installation jobs for industrial, commercial and residential customers.  Customer-based activities require an individual possessing traits of decisiveness, initiative, tact, judgment, integrity, dependability, and the ability to communicate in a technically credible manner.  Job related contact can occur with virtually all demographic groups, with the majority of working contacts being customers, other CHC Mechanical employees, the CHC Job Superintendent, the CHC Project Manager, the CHC Estimator and the other trades.

Daily job stress will run from minimal to extreme, based on such factors as the weather, site considerations, time constraints, and job needs.  An average workday will be moderately stressful.

Representative job duties include:

  • Selects gauge and type of sheet metal according to product being fabricated, knowledge of metal and job standards and specifications.
  • May do layout of fittings and duct, including manually locating and marking dimensions and reference lines on sheet metal or inputting data into layout computer.
  • May cut metal to form fittings using either hand tools or power tools.
  • May set up and operate fabricating machines, such as shears, brakes, bending rolls, and punch and drill presses to cut, bend and straighten sheet metal.
  • May shape metal over anvils, blocks or forms, using hammer.
  • May set up and operate soldering and welding equipment to join together sheet metal parts.
  • May smooth seams, joints or burred surfaces, using files and portable grinder or buffer.
  • May install assemblies in plant or work site according to blueprint specifications using hand tools and portable power tools.
  • May fabricate and install assemblies and systems in manufacturing plants or work sites according to blueprints, specifications and other resource information using hand tools, portable power tools and other specialized equipment.
  • Inspects assemblies and installation work for conformance with plans, specifications and trade standards using naked eye as well as measuring instruments, such as measuring tape, rule, plumb bob or level.
  • Performs routine fabrication and/or installation activities without direct oversight or on-site assistance.
  • Assists in training of new CHC Mechanical employees on installation related subjects.
  • Conducts non-installation work in support of the Fabrication Shop and Service Departments, as assigned.
  • May perform clerical functions as needed (Example: Daily Reports, Receiving Tickets, etc.).
  • Conforms to all applicable CHC Policies and Procedures.
  • Performs related duties as directed by the applicable CHC Job Foreman or CHC Job Superintendent.

2.  Job Qualifications

Able to:

  • Possess a mechanical aptitude.
  • Understand shop math.
  • Work skillfully with tools, metals and machines.
  • Visualize objects in three-dimensions from drawings, sketches or blueprints.
  • Work within precise limits and standards of accuracy.
  • Perform a variety of duties that may change often.
  • Rate information using measurable standards.
  • Physically must be able to:
      • Perform all duties noted above under the conditions, circumstances and extreme weather conditions indicative to job site location.
      • Be able to use hands, fingers, arms and legs fully.
      • Lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 60 pounds frequently.
      • Possess good vision (either naturally or with correction).
      • Climb and maintain balance on high ladders and scaffolds and stand for long periods of time.
      • Stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Must not have fear of heights (acrophobia).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and graduate of a post-secondary program of instruction of two or more years in duration or completion of apprenticeship program or similar training program and appropriate work experience required.
  • Have one or more years of successful and full-time installation experience in craft.
  • Have good oral and reading skills, including the ability to read and apply the project plans and specifications and the manufacturers’ installation instructions, and clearly communicate with customers, suppliers, other CHC Mechanical employees, and other trades.
  • Demonstrate an interest and initiative in maintaining his/her skills through a combination of self-study, company training, manufacturers’ workshops, and other professional development activities.
  • May require a current Tennessee Operator’s license and the ability to operate all types of vehicles in the corporate fleet within 30 days of initial employment.  If applicable, incumbent must be insurable by CHC Mechanical’s current insurance carrier.
  • Have the ability to work efficiently, given time pressures, non-standard schedule, extreme weather conditions indicative to job site location, varying customer needs and demands, and backlog constraints.
