1. Summary of Duties
A Plumber/Pipe Fitter Mechanic reports to the applicable CHC Job Foreman or, in some cases, CHC Job Superintendent and is responsible for performing a range of plumbing and piping installation jobs for industrial, commercial, and residential customers. Customer-based activities require an individual possessing traits of decisiveness, initiative, tact, judgment, integrity, dependability, and the ability to communicate in a technically credible manner. Job-related contact can occur with virtually all demographic groups, with the majority of working contacts being clients, other CHC Mechanical Employees, the CHC Job Foreman or CHC Job Superintendent, the CHC Project Manager, and the other trades.
Daily job stress will run from minimal to extreme, based on such factors as the weather, site considerations, time constraints, job, and customer needs. An average workday will be moderately stressful.
Representative duties include:
- Assembly, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes. Lay out, fabricate, assembly, install, and maintain piping and piping systems, fixtures, and equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial processing systems.
- Study building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and plan sequence of installations to avoid obstructions and activities of other construction workers.
- Inspect structure and work site as a whole to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe and to ascertain that holes needed to be cut will not cause structural weakness.
- Locate and mark position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob.
- Cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings, using hand tools and power tools.
- Select type and size of pipe and related materials according to job specifications.
- Cut pipe, using hacksaw, pipe cutters, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, or pipe cutting machine.
- Thread pipe, using threading machine or by hand.
- Bend pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or by bending it by hand.
- Assembly and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay and plastic, using hand tools and power tools.
- Test piping systems for leaks by use of appropriate method.
- Install and repair plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, and water softeners.
- Secure pipes to structure with clamps, brackets, and hangers, using hand tools.
- May install refrigeration and air-conditioning piping systems including valves, sight glasses and associated equipment.
- May weld holding fixtures or bracing to structural steel members.
- Perform routine plumbing/piping installation activities without direct oversight or on-site assistance.
- Assist in training of new CHC Mechanical employees on installation related subjects.
- Conform to CHC Policies or Procedures.
- Perform normal clerical functions as required (Example: Daily Reports, Receiving Tickets, etc.).
- Conduct non-installation work in support of the Fabrication Shop and Service Departments, as assigned.
- Perform related duties as directed by the applicable CHC Job Foreman or CHC Job Superintendent.
2. Job Qualifications
Able to:
- Work within industry standards of accuracy.
- Possess a mechanical aptitude.
- Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
- Visualize objects in three-dimensions from plans and drawings.
- Physically, workers must be able to:
- Perform all duties noted above under the conditions, circumstances, and extreme weather conditions indicative to job site location.
- Work easily and skillfully with hands.
- Possess good vision (either naturally or with correction).
- Lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 60 pounds frequently.
- Climb and maintain balance on high ladders and scaffolds.
- Stand, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Must not have fear of heights (acrophobia).
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and graduate of a post-secondary plumbing/pipe fitting program of instruction of two or more years in duration or completion of apprenticeship or similar training program required.
- Have four or more years of successful and full-time plumbing/pipe fitting experience.
- Have good oral and reading skills, including the ability to read and apply the project plans and specifications, and the manufacturers’ installation instructions and clearly communicate with customers, suppliers, other CHC Mechanical employees and other trades.
- Demonstrate an interest and initiative in maintaining his/her trade skills through a combination of self-study, company training, manufacturers’ workshops, and other professional development activities.
- May require a current Tennessee operator’s license and the ability to operate all types of vehicles in the corporate fleet within 30 days of initial employment. If applicable, incumbent must be insurable by CHC Mechanical’s current insurance carrier.
- Have the ability to work efficiently given time pressures, non-standard schedule, extreme weather conditions indicative to job site location, varying customer needs and demands, and backlog constraints.
- May require to be licensed.
